Nighthawk 650 Lack of Power

October 26th, 2011 by BT No comments »

Hopefully someone can give me good advice.  My mechanic skills are far less developed than my enthusiasm for bikes.

My 85 Nighthawk 650 takes about 6-7 minutes to warm up with the choke on, and giving it any throttle at all in the first couple minutes will stall it.  Once warmed up, the choke needs to be at least 1/3 on or it will not run.  It accelerates fairly well, but tops out at 70 mph.

I was thinking the carbs are definately gummed up, but then the other day I started to notice that something is burning inside the right exhaust.  Shut the bike off, and smoke is still coming out.  My thought was that possibly something built a nest in there and is clogging the exhaust….which would explain the poor fuel economy and lack of top end power.

Does anyone know how to remove the baffles easily?  I really don’t want to go through the headaches of removing exhaust that has been bolted on for 26 years if I don’t have to.  My plan was to remove the baffles and at least visually inspect the pipes….and see if it runs better with them removed.

Everyone still riding?

I am, whenever possible.  I just got the Sportster backfrom service and getting a backrest put on.  I left it at my office and I’ll take it in for my free Winter storage whenever….it’s 5 minutes away from the dealer. My Nighthawk is still in my garage…waiting for a warm day or evening.

poker run – bike show

September 23rd, 2011 by b4ssr 1 comment »

Just an FYI – There is going to be a poker run followed by a bike show next weekend Oct. 1 – in Wooster. Starts at the Goowill sotore on the Northend of town (Milltown Rd.) and supposed to end in downtown Wooster with a bike show and a lot of the usual bike stuff. Knowing how that area gets into their motor sports it should be a good one, I believe I will have to go on this one.

Beautiful Riding Tonight

Honda VL600 and Harley Sportster XL883LI took a nice ride through Twinsburg-Solon then the long way back on the freeway.  I’m dying to take the Nighthawk out for a ride, but I haven’t transferred the title yet.  So, tonight was a Sportster night.

I love riding that Sportster (2011 Superlow)….but I am extremely careful to remember to just be a rider, and not a “Harley rider.”

The Nighthawk, aside from needing the title transferred, really needs some carb work.  It won’t idle at all unless the choke is on…I’m guessing the idle needles/jets are all gummed up.

1985 Honda Nighthawk 650

1985 Honda CB650 Nighthawk1985 Honda CB650 NighthawkThis is the 1985 Honda CB650 Nighthawk that I bought.  It purrs like a kitten and just needs a little work on the carbs, and the paint is REALLY faded.

I try not to edit posts once they are posted….but I made a major goof on this one.  This is  NOT a project bike – it’s a rider.  It needs a few things but nothing major as far as I know.

1997 Honda VL600 (Shadow)

1997 Honda VL600 Shadow

Well, here is my wife’s new bike….a 1997 Honda VL600 Shadow.  Aside from the horrible paint scheme, I think it’s a really nice bike.  It came with drag pipes and is obnoxiously loud.

What I really think is cool though is how low it idles.  I mean, it sounds like the 40′s Harleys.

Anyway I finally got my endorsement and she now has her temp license.  I spent last weekend teaching her how to use a clutch and shift gears.  She picked it up very quickly and this past weekend we ventured out on the public roads for some cruising…thankfully with no incident more severe than the fact that it poured on us.

All new bikes

Well it’s been a while since I’ve done any updates.  I’ve had quite a few changes.  First, I sold the CL200.  It really wasn’t what I wanted,so I found someone that was willing to give me a decent settlement for it,and alsopromise that they wouldn’t scrap it.

Second, I fell in love with a 2011 Harley 883 Superlow and traded the 2008 Kawasaki for it.  More on that later…although I’ll say now that I refuse to be a douche even though I have a Harley.

Next, my wife dediced to start ridingthis past weekendso we picked up a 1997 Honda VL600 (oldShadow) for her.  Moreon that later.

Finally, for my love of vintage bikes,I bought a 1985 Honda CB650 Nighthawk….will be getting that next week.

Anyone elsehave anything new?
