I’m at a crossroads with my 1989 GSX-R. I’m thinking about putting up an ad to see if someone wants to trade for an older Honda/Yamaha/Kawasaki.
Mentally, it scares the crap out of me since it was not only a fast bike from the factory, but is now a retired racing bike and will be scary fast once it’s running again. On the other hand, just looking at it and thinking about the potential that it has is very exciting.
I guess I could de-tune it and try to get it back to factory specs….but that could be a ton of money.
Any suggestions? Should I just try to trade it for something more civil?

Pictures dude….

B, I may be interested in it if you decide to part with it. I’ve been thinking about building another oil cooled Gsxr.
Gear it up. Little rear sprocket. That way it will take the edge off some.
Ride it!!!!
Personally, I would not try to get rid of the bike just because it is “fast.” A “slow” motorcycle can injure you to the same degree as a fast one. Keep in mind that if it is an old race bike, it is upgraded in areas other than the engine, like the brakes and suspension. These upgrades should make the motorcycle safer as you can turn with more confidence, and brake harder. Besides, just because a motorcycle has more power doesn’t mean you have to ride it irrespsonsibly. I own a modern sportbike, and even though I consider myself a good rider, I don’t ride the bike nearly to its potential, as is the case with just about everyone who owns one. Unless you are racing this bike in WSBK or AMA, etc, you will not reach it’s potential in stock form. De-tuning it would be a waste of time and money. If the bike excites you, keep it and make it your own. If you only trade it for fear of its power, you may live with regret. Just my $.02
You make a good point.
I’m converned about my own self control when the power is there to be used. On my small bikes, I have no choice but to be a very conservative rider.
It is an awesome looking bike…I’ll probably end up just keeping it.
