On my way back from activities with the kids, I decided to stop by State 8 and take a look around.
I’ve never been into sports bikes, but ever since I bought that GSX-R I’ve been seeing them in a different light. I love all of these new street fighter/naked bike models and the Suzuki SV650S really caught my eye. It’s more of a sport cruiser and the riding position is extremely comfortable.
Anyway, they had a used 2007 model going cheap cheap cheap. I was so tempted to trade in the Vulcan 500. Luckily, self control set in before I left and I went home without any need to kiss my wife’s ass for forgiveness!

I have an SV1000S… and I’ve heard nothing but great things about the little brother SV650s. Those bikes have the best looking tail section on any of the Japanese machines as far as I’m concerned (bias or not). I put a lot of research into that bike model before I finally picked one up, there is no better base platform than an SV to turn that bike into whatever you want (tourer, sport bike, etc). Reliability is top notch and parts are cheap. I can’t tell you how many guys love racing the 650s because of the low costs to service the bikes.
The only things the 650S give up to the SV1000s (besides about 40hp), is better forks. The SV1000s have adjustable forks and the 650s do not. Also, the SV1ks end of production was 2007 (so they’re a more rare find), but the body/frame parts are interchangeable between the two.
Be sure to check out svrider.com if you’re serious about one, they have ALL the info you’d need to know.
Though with the Buell announcement and Honda trying to move the 2008 CBR models… a bunch of other deals could be had over the SVs – especially the Buell.
Thanks for the info. From everything I’m reading, I don’t think anyone is dissatisfied with one of these. I just found out there’s a Suzuki dealer 5 monutes from my office too…I may be in trouble.
Throw self control out the window and go get that SV. It is a great, versatile motorcycle. You can load it up with luggage and go touring, or tape up your lights and take it to the track. SVs are popular in the club-level racing bodies, and very competetive.
Oh man…I’m really thinking about it. If it wasn’t October and if there was much forseeable riding left this year, I think it wouldn’t even be a question.
Those are great bikes. I have a Yamaha FZ1 which is also one of those naked sport bikes. Had a lot of Vulcans too. Love em all. Still ride my cruisers more often though.
Yeah, I love my Vulcan 500, it’s a great bike and I love the sound of it’s engine (parallel twin). I just have a craving for something with a little more “oomph” to it for freeway riding. It does ok, but lacks the power on demand when needed.
Just sold one of my Vulcan Classic 1500s last month. I still love them. You can find nice ones with low miles for around $3500 to $4000 and they handle well.
