Just signed up

October 28th, 2009

Hi, fellow vintage bike enthusiasts. I’ve just started getting into the vintage bike thing this past year and I’m hooked!!! I love the old smaller hondas. I currently have 3 1972 scrambler 350’s. 1 is very nice and the other 2 are fair to good, just need a little work to make them nice as well. I also have a 1973 CB 350 that was a great find, only 2,700 miles and in a heated garage all it’s life. Just picked up a 1971 CT 70 that runs and has a title, but is in poor shape. Got the motor out of it and almost ready to sandblast and paint. I have the original paint code and I’m ordering all the original decals. I also picked up a 1977 Suzuki GS 550 it’s in good condition and runs great, but I’m just not into it like the Honda’s. So the GS is for sale if anyone is interested, I’m also considering selling 1 of the unfinished Scramblers. If anyone is interested let me know and I can get pics. to you and more detailed info. Get out and ride while you can, the season is almost over !!

Wingnut just signed up!

October 27th, 2009

Hello from Pickerington, Ohio. I live close the AMA. I have enjoyed some of the blog and just decided to chime in. I’m a hardcore wing rider currently on a GL18 and wifey rides a creampuff GL11 standard. I’ll post some pics of it soon as it is a 6000 mi bike, pearl white and tastefully pinstriped with pink and purple – kinda girlie, which is what she wanted. I am restoring an old Velorex sidehack as a winter project to hang on it – something different. Also, recently in the stable is a 5000 mile CA160, 72 CT90, 66 S90, the coolest 77 Wing cafe’ convert you’ve seen and a couple dual sports we take camping. How many of us wish we had back what we have sold? I regret letting a 69 T500 go this past spring and the prettiest red 78 KZ650 SE in town. Know what SE stood for? State side edition – Kaw hung the turn signals on the handlebars, painted and chopped the front fender – sort of to mimic a sportster – thus designating SE. Ok that’s everyone’s trivia for today.
If anybody needs GL1000 parts, I have a good many stock piled that would be happy to let go – fyi. Ride safe! From a member of the “Some who have” club and scars to prove it. Wingnut

Second Winter Project

Other 79, on the right, is going 2 B rebuilt now...

Other 79, on the right, is going 2 B rebuilt now...

I bought the other 79 750 as a parts bike but evrything was there, including title, so I’m going to bring her up to speed also. She’s got more rust but I’m going to do a strip down to the frame on this one. Total investment, so far, $225…

I used the headlight assembly and turn signals for the 79 10th Annv. bike because I removed the Vetter faring. I’ve already stripped down the handle bars and removed back wheel. Valve cover gaskets leaked oil everywhere so I’ve got quite an oily mess to clean up…. more L8R…

Here’s a 79 XS650 I got for $50. Didn’t look like this when I got it! Head was loose but it hopped off the cylinders when I kicked it over so I figured good enough.  I painted it sort of like I remembered my old 73. I did use a bigger blue metal-flake this time but I liked it!  Sold it a few years ago.

New Bike Guages

October 25th, 2009

This may sound stupid and trivial, but almost all of the new model cruisers drive me nuts with their lack of a tachometer and the trendy placement of the speedometer on the gas tank.

My Vulcan is one such model.  It’s distracting to have to look down at the tank to see my speed, and I just like having a tach.

I think the best thing is exactly what most of the older imports have - a  speedometer and tachometer  mounted in front of the handlebars where they’re easy to read.

Newest Temptation

October 25th, 2009

On my way back from activities with the kids, I decided to stop by State 8 and take a look around.

I’ve never been into sports bikes, but ever since I bought that GSX-R I’ve been seeing them in a different light.  I love all of these new street fighter/naked bike models and the Suzuki SV650S really caught my eye.    It’s more of a sport cruiser and the riding position is extremely comfortable.

Anyway, they had a used 2007 model going cheap cheap cheap.  I was so tempted to trade in the Vulcan 500.  Luckily, self control set in before I left and I went home without any need to kiss my wife’s ass for forgiveness!

Reminder about the douchiest biker contest

October 23rd, 2009

Hi everyone.  Since we have so many new members again this week (112 in all), I wanted to bring up the Douchiest Biker Contest again.

We have two entries so far.  Details of the contest can be found HERE

In a couple weeks I will find a way that everyone can vote.  By the way – don’t forget to add something to the Partx Box if you’re able to.

Thanks to everyone again.     Brian

78 Honda GL1000

October 23rd, 2009

So many great old bikes. I really think it has addictive properties. If I won the lottery I would still love messing with the old stuff!

Working on a 78 Goldwing now but not stock. Did two stock ones already and really like them so it’s hard to go custom but……

GSX-R Indecision

October 23rd, 2009

I’m at a crossroads with my 1989 GSX-R.  I’m thinking about putting up an ad to see if someone wants to trade for an older Honda/Yamaha/Kawasaki.

Mentally, it scares the crap out of me since it was not only a fast bike from the factory, but is now a retired racing bike and will be scary fast once it’s running again.  On the other hand, just looking at it and thinking about the potential that it has is very exciting.

I guess I could de-tune it and try to get it back to factory specs….but that could be a ton of money.

Any suggestions?  Should I just try to trade it for something more civil?

I just sold my 1981 model, & I have a couple more in the works.  I love most all older bikes, & love seeing pics & hearing stories about them. Starting cafe project

October 22nd, 2009

Hi It getting to the off season and ready to start a father/son cafe project.Actually Im shocked my boy opted to get rid of our vitage yam DT and get a RD400 over a crotchrocket. What I need is some good advice and guidence as to parts sites, trick stuff and even though it runs good and got D&D chambers Im looking for some one with vitage 2 stroke wizardry capable enough to make this wicked yet torky enough to be street friendly. Right now Im sure the jetting is off because of the chambers. I set aside my crotch rockets and my boy and I have been riding pre 80 yams for two years now. OH when life was simple right. Also want to convert my Yam TT5oo into Cafe. I know there are some vintage wizards out there, hope to hear from some. Im an old MXer so this cafe stuff is a new horizon that I want to share with my boy Thanks in advance guys. hope to post pics of build up if any one is interested.
