Sorry about the sponsors

October 19th, 2009

Hey everyone.  First, we got a ton of new members these past few days.  Welcome everyone and I look forward to hearing about your bikes and projects.

Second, I’m REALLY sorry about the quality and quantity of ads running.  Since that certain unnamed giant corporation shut us down, I had to go with plan B and it’s going to take some time to get the content honed to match this site.  If I have to look at the guy that got ripped in 4 weeks much more, I really won’t be happy.  Hmmm…I wonder if he has a Harley with neon lights????????

Anyway, like I said before, these help pay for fun promotional stuff and contests, so please bear with me!!!  Thanks.

Site Stuff

October 18th, 2009

Hey all.  I’m happy to report that we now have 70 members.  I’m pretty happy that you all like the site and completely psyched that a lot of people are posting, sharing info, etc.  Thanks again to everyone.

You may have noticed that our ads disappeared.  That’s because a certain giant corporation apparently feels that it’s cool to shut down someone’s ad account without giving any explanation or giving them a chance to correct whatever tripped their alarm.  I am working on getting some other things rolling that will help pay for the site, HDDB contests, etc.

Aside from that, Ohio weather sucks and I’m hoping we can all stay interested in our bikes and projects over the long winter.  Thanks again to everyone.

GSX-R Has Arrived

October 15th, 2009

1989 GSX-R 750L Initial viewCrappy picture…I know.  The GSX-R arrived yesterday.  It’s worse off than I thought, but will surely make a great long term project.

I do have the tank and some of the body work, but it’s not on in this picture.    The back tire is a nice fattie!

So..I’m not sure where to begin with this thing.  I tried jumping the battery just to see if the lights and starter work, but it’s absolutely dead…so obviously a fuse or electrical problem.

All three calipers are frozen as well.

My immediate plan, aside from kind of chilling out for the winter, is to maybe get the calipers off and rebuild them over the winter.  I’ll poke around at the electrical issues, but not much until the spring (my garage is not heated).  The gas tank has no cap so it’s all rusted inside…another good winter task.  There’s really not much I can do I guess until it has a working electrical system and the ability to put fuel into it.

Another good task is cleaning out the carbs.  There is no way they’re not totally gummed up.  Does anyone know how to get the air box off of a 1989 GSX-R 750 so that I can then proceed to get the carbs off?

I almost forgot to mention – the guy told me this was a racing bike before he bought it in 1994.  That seems to be accurate since it has a racing seat, front slick, and little twisted wires through and around most of the bolts.  Supposedly the engine is build and has Wiseco pistons and some other crap and output is (was) around 130+ horsepower.

That’s too much.  If I need to do a top end rebuild, I’ll de-tune it.  I don’t need or want that kind of power.  The stock 102 HP is more than enough.

cb updates

October 15th, 2009

Well the weather sucks and I have not rode for over a month (wich blows it’s gonna be a long winter)  So my 81 900 custom is completely tore down to a pile of parts, my neighbor has the frame, swing arm ect. to sandblast at eriez magnetics, the engine has been cleaned and waiting for me to have the ambition to polish . thats where that’s at. My 80 cb 750k with a 900 f engine is still pretty much complete ( I pulled the carbs to try on the 900c and never reinstalled them) I am gonna make a bobber/cafe racer outa that one cuz  it’s a fast harley douche bag eating son-of-a-bitch 130+mph with out sweating  on a 30 year old bike!!!! Any how if anyone needs any cb750 dohc parts let me know I have an almost complete engine that came with my 750k that was only pulled to put in the 900f (I was told that it ran fine) . Also I have another 750  bottom end, jugs, head, lots of cover’s ,chrome fenders, misc. stuff!  Let me know if I can help anyone out, I live in nw pa near the pa oh line by the lake. I will get some pics up soon (although there is nothing to see w/the 900c  spread out in a gararge it looks like spare parts) Later!!!!!!

Tomos Silver Bullet: My First Ride

October 14th, 2009

Although I had a 1974 Honda Trail 70 as a little kid, I consider this to be my first ride:  a 1986 Tomos Silver Bullet (this picture is linked, that is not my actual moped, but identical to it).

Between the ages of 14 and 16 I put over 6,000 miles on it, riding it every chance I had.

I just goes to show how silly certain laws are though.  In order to qualify as a moped in Ohio, at the time, the engine had to be 50 cc or less, it had to have pedals, and could go no faster than 20 MPH.  I think it had to have a maximum power of 1 or 2 horsepower too.  The thing is, pedaling this thing was so laborious that there was really no practical way to NOT use the engine.

The other thing I remember about it, aside from the amazing reliability from a Yugoslavian vehicle (I know you all remember the Yugo) was the absolutely HORRIBLE transmission in it.  It had a two speed automatic and literally would never shift unless you were going downhill.  None the less, I went everywhere with it, beat the crap out of it, and it seemed to never break.

In my twenties I traded it for some beer to a friend that had a use for it.  I kind of wish I still had it.

My First M.C.

1965 Yamaha Street/Trail 80

1965 Yamaha Street/Trail 80

I found this add while trying to find info on my first bike a Yamaha Trail 80, bought new for $350.00. We brought it home in the back of my Grandmothers car from a dealer in Elk City, Ok. What an exciting day that was! My brother and I went in together to buy it, me working as a soda jerk at a local drug store and my brother changing tires at a gas station. The reason we just had to have one was because our friend Fred got one for his birthday and it was to cool! Ours was black and we took our M.C. tests on it, ( in Oklahoma you could get your M.C. license at 14 as long as the bike was under 5 hp). Another friend of mines Twin Jet 100 was under 5hp too I believe.

The coolest thing about it was that it had 2 back sprockets, one for street and one for trail riding. You just got out your tool kit and an extra lenth of chain that came with it and set up the big trail sprocket. I once rode, knobby tires and all, 14 miles to a dirt track race, reset rear sprocket for the race, got really muddy, set the street sprocket back up and rode back. Can’t remember my finishing position as I was totally hammered by all the 125 enduros and all out dirt bikes but it was still fun. With the trail sprocket on it was also the best hill climming bike I’ve ever had. Straight up in first gear, lean way forward and keep the front wheel down till you got to the top, my 125 wouldn’t even do that! That little 80 blew smoke and got really loud after the baffle burned out. We rode it through 3 sets of tires, chains & sprockets until a hole burned through the piston.

When my Grandmother passed a few years ago we were going through her stuff and I found the black Yamaha scarf that the dealer had given us when we bought the bike. We had no idea that she had kept it all these years. It had the white Yamaha logo on it just like the one at the bottom of the add. My daughter wears it sometimes when she rides…

Another Douchiest Biker Entry from Scully

October 12th, 2009

From our user Scully:

I recently showed my 750 to a neighbor who has 2 H.D.s, ( thought he would greet me as a fellow biker ), what I got was a, ” Now you can fix it up, sell it and be one step closer to getting a Harley…”, all the while cleaning the mud off his YAMAHA 4 wheeler that he had just rode that weekend…DUUUUHHH???? I almost said,” Where’s your Harley 4 wheeler?”, but I just bit my tongue and rode off knowing I’m better than that! I had an ‘81 Ironhead/Harley, and I’m proud that I have treated riders of other makes and models with the repect that we all deserve…

Hey – it’s not only about wearing excessive leather and spending too much on chrome, it’s also about pointing that out to everyone!!

slippery slope.

October 12th, 2009

hello everyone. so, vintage bikes. my wife really is tired of it but im obsessed.  it all started for me in high school. i got my hands on a 78 cr250. it was a rat but it ran like a raped ape. life happened and i had to sell it.  long story short, here i am with 4 projects and one rider. i went the dirtbike route due to affordability. well they used to be cheap but it seems to be a fad now.. driving the prices up for us. i am trying to scrape up enough cash to buy an old cb but with 4 projects and two kids….and the wife…… doesnt leave much for street bikes. anyway  just wanted to say hey and cool site. look forward to talking to other likeminded people.

My Winter Project

1979 HONDA 750 10th Annv. Model

I’ve already eliminated the ugly Vetter faring and luggage rack so this winter I plan on bringing her back up to speed. There is a noise in the engine which worrys me and she needs starter, chain and sprockets etc. Runs fine with a slight hesitation at low end but evens out nice. Had up to 80, no prob. How do I determine what is causeing noise behind ign. plate, left side?
