Contest Entry From Honda Bubba

October 12th, 2009

This just came in from a new site menber, Honda Bubba:

Here’s a little story I think is kinda Douchie. While combing CL I can across a post for a GS 550 for sell or trade. The add went on about how the person just upgraded to a HD and that the GS would make a good wifebike or beginer ride, and things he might trade for. One thing on the list was a Guitar, so I replayed about my Peavy/Preditor (Made in USA). I got a smug replay that he would only be interested in MIM Fender Strats. (MIM – Made in Mexico.)The Peavy and Strat are almost identical guitars save the name on the neck. OK, that being said, I’m sure this person is confused, or a Douchiebag, lol. Just a little story, Thanks for letting me vent

Thanks for the post.  The douchey element I’ve found is the “upgraded to a Harley” part.  Obviously he wanted to make sure that everyone knows he has a Harley now, in case there was any doubt in your mind over whether or not he did in fact “upgrade”.  Since he insists on MIM even though it’s the same thing as the one made in the USA, we know he’s interested only in the finest things in life, as long as they carry social status with them.  Thanks for your post!

JRMMiii’s DB Experience

October 11th, 2009

I’m Creating a new post in respponse to JRMMiii’s comment on our Douchiest Biker contest:

Saw the ad on Cleveland Craigslist for this. I don’t have any vintage bikes (both are 2003’s), but my ol’ man has 3 CBXs so hopefully I qualify by proxy.

I won’t post the whole story, here, but I posted it on ohio-riders.net.

http://www.ohio-riders.com/showthread.php?t=34023

Suffice to say I was over a hundred miles away from home to be accosted by this internet nutjob in a Wendy’s in Zanesville – all because we busted his chops about “dragging knee” without proper gear.

First, you are of course welcome here.  I don’t care if you don’t own a motorcycle at all – this site is for vintage bike enthusiasts af all kinds.  Actually, since my vintage Honda is only kinda-sorta roadworthy at this point, you’ll most often find me riding my 2008 Kawasaki.
So, what were you and your friends riding?  Is there any special reason that some complete stranger would track you down and call you a poser…with a video camera?  That’s beyong douchey, that’s just plain freaky.
I’d love to hear more about it, and thank you very much for contributing to my site.  I’d also love to hear more about your dad’s CBXs.  Thanks.

My 1976 Suzuki GT380

October 11th, 2009
Thom Glick's 1976 Suzuki GT380

Thom Glick's 1976 Suzuki GT380

Thought I’d try my first post as a proper motorcyclist. I own a 1976 Suzuki GT380. It’s a two-stroke three cylinder bike. She smokes and gobbles up fuel faster than any bike her size, but she’s torquey and comfy and packed with class. In the 70′s this bike was surprisingly ranked third in the middle-weight class, after the Suzuki GT550 and the Honda CB550. I was surprised that the bike beat the now-much-coveted Kawasaki Triples.

This is GT380 is my first bike. I just received my motorcycle endorsement a week or two ago, just after completing the MSF Beginner’s Course. I’d never ridden a bike prior to that class, but I’d been interested in motorcycles since high school. I’ve been racing bicycles on and off since high school. I have a love for two-wheeled speed.

I’ve logged roughly 200 miles in my first week of riding.

As I’m learning what kind of rider I am, I’m trying to decide what to do with my vintage bike. I realize that GT380′s are somewhat rare, so I feel an obligation to clean the bike up. The previous owner(s) trashed the bike somewhat; when I got the bike, she had broken spokes with more snapping every day, the three-into-four pipes were literally packed and dripping with thirty years of oil build-up, the chain was rusty red, missing bolts, and a ton of other issues that simple maintenance and care should have prevented. Being a newbie, I turned the bike over to the guys at WBS Fabrication, in Dublin OH. They cleaned up all the issues mentioned, plus rebuilt the carbs and handled a handful of electrical problems.

The previous owner, for whatever reason, spray painted the bike blue. Scratches reveal that the bike was originally black with the staple chrome fenders.

Should I restore the bike back to its stock glory? Black bike with chrome fenders? Locate the missing chrome tail-luggage rack? Or should I go in the other direction and hack this thing into a need-for-speed cafe racer?

Winter’s coming to Ohio, so now’s the perfect time to start prepping for a project. But, until there’s ice on the ground, I’m planning to keep logging miles and enjoying this tasty vintage motorcycle.

1989 Suzuki GSX-R 750

October 10th, 2009

1989 gsxr 750I almost forgot to mention – the guy got the title straightened out so this week I am planning on going to get my gixxer.  Sorry, that may be douchebag talk for “GSX-R” but I’m none the less excited.

It’s 20 years old, so that qualifies as vintage, right?  I watched the Suzuki episode of Twist The Throttle and it sounds like this bike had played pretty significant role in creating the sport bike market.  I’ve never really been into sport bikes, but I think these are really cool with the side by side headlights – a look I’ve always loved.

This will be bike #3 in my collection.  The first is my 2008 Kawasaki Vulcan 500 that was my first bike.  It’s pretty nice and really resembles the classic Japanese bikes of the 70′s and 80′s but it just doesn’t excite me all that much and low speed steering is a pain in the ass.  It’s incredibly comfortable for riding though and the engine is extremely smooth (good old parallel twin).  The second is of course my 1974 Honda CL200.

I’m also not really into customizing very much, but have been itching to do it a little.  The Kawasaki is too new to molest and the Honda is too rare and classic to molest.  This one should be a little fun…and the top end of the engine is f’ed so I’ll get to play around with a rebuild too. Hopefully the gearbox is fine.

CL200: The G.D. Gas Is Still Leaking

October 10th, 2009

1974 Honda CL200 Carbs still leaking gasThis is starting to really piss me off.  Does anyone know what would cause fuel to constantly drip out of the overflow tubes on the carbs?

I mean, I know it’s because (1) the petcock needs a rebuild and is not stopping the flow of fuel and (2) the floats are obviously not doing their job and stopping the fuel.

I’ve ben up the metal tabs in order to push the needle valves higher sooner, but it seems to not make a difference.  Could my valves just be worn?  It’s doing this on both carbs.

By the way, the picture above is my work around for this problem so that my garage isn’t an enormous fire hazard.  I looped a hose between the two petcock outlets and then let the carbs drain back into an empty bottle.

we’re lucky) Just bought this TX750 and am diei-

We’re #5 for Harley Douchebags

October 6th, 2009

That’s right!  Google harley douchebags and today you’ll find us fifth in the list.  I only know this from looking at our analytics reports….but I’m satisfied none the less.  Maybe after this post with excessive use of the phrase harley douchebags we’ll move up to the number one spot.  Of course, it’s kind of our thing that this is a site where you will NOT find harley douchebags.

I saw another article in the list that talks about how you find more douchebags on sport bikes than on Harleys, and I’m kind of on the fence about that.  One one hand, they’re absolutely right.  On the other hand, the sport bike guys seem to have a much firmer grip on who they are and don’t have some sort of 1%er wannabe thing going on.  They don’t blabber on about brotherhood and then proceed to turn their noses up at someone riding the wrong brand…rather the sport bike guys are pretty much upfront about wanting to hang only with othe rpeople riding sport bikes.

I guess when I fix up my GSX-R I’ll be able to gain an inside perspective on that crowd.
