Does anyone have a good trick for cleaning up these nasty looking old shocks? This is my 1974 Honda CL200. I’ve been able to get the outside of the spring in some parts, but I don’t have a good plan for the inside. I would really NOT like to spend $150ish on a new set.

Thank You James! After dancing around with the frame and after James sugested we remove right side motor mount, the right side of frame came off for a somewhat easy removal of the engine. A transmission dolly would have been a plus here as an afterthought. May do the old milk carton trick for putting back in.
Honda CL200 production numbers
November 4th, 2009Hello all! Just joined this site and happy to see that I am not the only person interested in vintage motorcycles. I bought my first vintage Honda, a CL200, about a year and a half ago. Friend of mine had it in his shed, bought it for $100. I have been slowly working on it since. I just recently acquired another CL200 for the same price only 35 miles from my house! For those who don’t know, Honda made this model only one year, making them a bit hard to come by (apparently not for me though!). What I would like to know is how many were made? Anyone know where to find this kind of info? I would like to talk to other CL200 owners also, and maybe start a registry.

November 3rd, 2009Well, I might as well throw in my pics, too. I ran across this bike in a craigslist ad, and it had been sitting in a barn for a while, but was in running condition when I bought it. As fate would have it, the bike was slow to reveal quite a few problems under the surface. Since I’ve had this bike (just over two years) I’ve replaced a bunch of little things, and also replaced the stator, rectifier, coils/wires, valve head, various gaskets, cables and signal lights. Aftermarket upgrades: Halogen headlight and lamp, bobbed rear fender, two different paint schemes, small fairing, fork brace and gaitors, custom rim tape, custom vinyl graphics and just added a Vance and Hines 4 into 1 with a Muzzy cannister that sounds wicked. I’ve still got a long way to go, as the matte paint job (rattle can BTW) will need freshened up over the winter months.
So here she is, my 1982 GS850g. The Punisher.




Thanks for looking. Now it’s off to terrorize the streets of Columbus.

1981 H.D./AMF Sportster/Ironhead
Bought this “basket case” for $2500, rode it on one cylinder 40+ miles, blowing smoke all the way, to a small M.C. mechanic I knew so he could do the top end. When he got it apart he said that the piston that was blowing smoke had a hole in it the size of a quarter! It was origionally black with a regular sporty tank but I went through it, painted the frame and had another friend of mine paint it with a two part custom epoxy paint. Used S&S carb and other misc parts to get her looking the way she did. Rode her to Daytona twice before selling,(for$4500), to move to Ohio from Fla. The main thing I hated about the bike was that it had an old generator system that never charged right and that valves needed adjusting constantly and after about 4 or 5000 miles, another top end… the rebuild took about 6 months and was a real learning experience but was easier to work on that I thought it would be as everything was S.A.E. and I got a lot of bolts and stuff from the hardware store…

Hey – my first success with this project! The throttles were completely stuck and wouldn’t budge.
After some careful persuasion, some WD40 and a pair of pliers, I finally got them to move. After some more WD40 and manually opening and closing them about 30 or 40 times, they now move freely and spring back into the closed position as they should.
As you can see from the picture, the two end throttles aren’t in alignment with the other two. That’s because there’s a spring missing from each one and they flop around. I have both of them (they fell out)…should be interesting trying to get them back into place.
